"Hopkins Sued for $12M: Hospital released man's medical files", Baltimore Business Journal

August 24, 2001

Laura L. Katz, a Partner in the Business Department and a member of the Health Law Practice Group in the Firm's Baltimore office, is quoted in this article about a lawsuit filed against Johns Hopkins Hospital by a former patient who claimed the hospital ruined his life by releasing information about his psychiatric problems to a disgruntled former friend.

The lawsuit comes at a time when patient privacy issues are at the forefront of healthcare reform as healthcare organizations grapple with implementing the federal Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA).

"The awareness of the privacy issue is at an all-time high right now because of things like HIPAA," Ms. Katz is quoted as saying. "People are looking at how patient privacy is handled and the obligations that are on health plans and providers."
