Doreen Y. Trujillo, a partner in the Patent Services Practice, is quoted in this story about U.S. patent system changes that will go into effect on March 16, 2013 under the America Invents Act. Doreen explains that one part of the new law expands the definition of what is considered prior art to include published patent applications from anywhere in the world and used or sold outside the U.S.

"That's a major change coming into effect that I don't think people have thought as much about, since the focus has been on first-to-file," Doreen said. "But the expanding scope of prior art really makes it beneficial to file before March 16."
