As a partner in Saul Ewing Arnstein & Lehr's Health and Technology & Manufacturing practice groups, Scott Patterson represents regional health systems and other healthcare and life-sciences businesses in a wide range of technology-related matters.

Representing healthcare technology customers, he has helped clients acquire a wide range of information systems and medical devices, together with related installation, operations, maintenance, hosting, and support services.

Recent transactions include negotiating and documenting the acquisition of complex systems for:

  • Proton therapy, in six of the first such facilities to be constructed in the United States
  • Electronic health records management
  • Admission, discharge, and transfer (ADT)
  • CPT coding, billing and reimbursement
  • Picture archiving and communications (PACS)
  • Electronic ICU facilities
  • Radiation therapy and radiosurgery equipment
  • Care management
  • Patient flow management and bed tracking
  • Medical records scanning and imaging
  • Pharmacy and medication management
  • Patient and fetal monitoring
  • Network and telecommunications infrastructure
  • Grant, sponsorship and fundraising management

Mr. Patterson has also negotiated major IT facilities management arrangements, including the outsourcing of a health system's entire IT function, and subsequent amendments and renegotiations. He has also built on his earlier litigation background to negotiate successful contract terminations and to resolve disputes arising from failed IT projects.

Representing vendors, Mr. Patterson has negotiated licensing and distribution agreements for both healthcare and pharmaceutical software, including products for data processing, business intelligence, market forecasting, radiology image management, managed-care claims administration, and clinical trials.

On the technology-transfer side, he has represented parties to collaboration, development, and commercialization agreements, including related patent licenses, for both pharmaceutical and biotechnology products. Mr. Patterson authored the software chapters of a recent Food & Drug Law Institute book on "Bringing Your Medical Device to Market."
