Ira M. Shepard

Ira Shepard has practiced labor law, representing management, on a nationwide basis for more than 40 years. He has worked in a broad range of our country's major industries and now focuses on working with clients in the higher education, advertising, entertainment, and government contracting industries.

As a labor law litigator, Ira has defended employers facing a broad range of labor and employment law issues, including handling scores of bench and jury trials, appellate cases and administrative agency matters.

Significant representations include:

  • Numerous summary judgment victories in age, race and gender discrimination litigation and sexual harassment cases
  • Favorable jury verdict enforcing non-compete provisions and granting damages against offending competitor
  • U.S. Court of Appeals victory reversing an adverse arbitration award

As a management negotiator, Ira was the advertising industry's lead negotiator and spokesperson over the multi-billion dollar collective bargaining negotiations with the Screen Actors Guild in 2000 and guided the industry through the longest strike in entertainment industry history. He followed that as the industry's chief negotiator over the 2003-2006 labor contract.

Ira has severed as general counsel to the College and University Professional Association for Human Resources for more than 35 years. He has also served as general counsel to the Association of Community College Trustees for 20-plus years.

Ira has written five labor and employment law books, four of which were published by Bloomberg BNA, on topics including privacy, employee theft, and employment at will. He writes the monthly labor law column, "Legal Watch," which is published online by the College and University Professional Association for Human Resources.

Ira is admitted to practice before the U.S. Supreme Court and the U.S. Court of Appeals for the First, Second, Third, Sixth, Seventh, Eighth, Ninth, Tenth, and D.C. Circuits.
